As a person with CPTSD and dyslexia, I often work with disabled cast & crew. It is my dream to bring more disability representation to the media especially from a Southeast Asian perspective.
Amanda and Shalom are my friends and the inspiration for this story comes from some of their experiences.
The story at first glance is simple - A husband works too hard and the wife feels neglected. I intentionally created a simple premise that anyone, abled or disabled, can relate to. However, the dialogues unveil the internalized ableism.
Traditional gender roles in relationships where men are primary providers & women are supportive companions are still prevalent in Singapore. When husbands and wives fail to fulfil these roles, their worthiness as a spouse is questioned.
This becomes an issue for couples with disabilities as their relationship cannot be defined by these traditional roles which are often ableist. This is what I wanted to explore with Lov - Able.
